Becoming a delivery partner

Can you or your organisation contribute to the delivery of our Local Plan for Music Education in Derby and Derbyshire?

In June 2022, the DfE published a new National Plan for Music Education (NPME). This redefines Hubs’ role as more strategic, supportive and developmental, with commissioned activity from a wider range of partners.

The power of music to change lives

"to enable all children and young people to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together, and have the opportunity to progress their musical interests, including professionally"
Vision of the revised National Plan for Music Education

Aims

The National Plan for Music Education sets out this vision against three aims:

  • 1. Support schools and other education settings to deliver high-quality music education
  • 2. Support young people to develop their musical interests and talent further, including into employment
  • 3. Support all children and young people to engage with a range of music opportunities in and out of school

Strategic functions

These aims are delivered at the local level through five strategic functions:

  • Partnerships: Working together to deliver a joined up music education in and out of schools to young people in our region
  • Schools: Working with and supporting schools to ensure quality music-making at all levels
  • Progression and musical development: Ensuring that in all we do there is a progression that enables young people to grow and develop their musical skills
  • Inclusion: Putting equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of what we do to understanding the needs of communities and how we can best deliver outcomes with and for them
  • Sustainability: Commiting to ways of working and delivering our programmes of activity that are environmentally and financially sustainable

Our Local Plan for Music Education

The hub's programme of activity is designed to meet the vision and aims of the National Plan at a local level across Derby and Derbyshire.

Hub Partner Organisations deliver activity in areas that match their expertise, helping to contribute to a joined up approach to music education in our region. Our programme of activity is split into four categories:

Education settings

Our hub already has a well established and comprehensive package of whole-class instrumental teaching programmes as well as a robust offer of singing programmes for schools . We also have established ways to access instrumental tuition in schools with help from bursaries and subsidies.

We are keen to develop:

  • our offer to Early Years settings
  • a broader offer of music from different traditions, cultures and backgrounds
  • music technology experts to help inspire routes into the music industry

Out of School

There are currently nine partner organisations offering weekly ensembles, choirs or musical theatre groups in term time across our region, hosting many performance opportunities throughout the year.

We are keen to develop:

  • a broader offer of ensembles and music-making opportunities from different traditions, cultures and backgrounds

Workforce

We welcome applications regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.

Instruments

We have a large stock of instruments and a single loan system operating across the two local authority areas. The DfE is investing a capital grant for musical instrument purchase in 2024-25.

We are keen to develop:

ideas and strategies on how we can best plan musical instrument purchases, storage and delivery capability to service need.
