Using story books as a springboard into music-making
Engaging music-based activities for KS1 settings, using stories to inspire singing, performing, composing, and listening | Wednesday 1 July
Stories are a fantastic starting point to help develop musical activities fit for children in Key Stage 1 settings.
This training will provide you with the resources to create meaningful and inclusive music-making activities, deliverable by any teacher regardless of music experience, that naturally expand on the imaginations sparked by existing stories.
What is included in the training?
- Share good practice: Take part in practical music‑making activities and dedicated discussion time, including insights from a Music Co‑ordinator at a Derbyshire Music Hub Lead School for Music and specialist curriculum guidance from a Music Curriculum Consultant.
- Explore stories through music: Discover how storybooks can act as a springboard into whole‑class music-making using tuned and untuned percussion, movement, listening activities and immersive soundscapes
- Develop creative approaches: Learn how to write new words to well‑known tunes and adapt familiar material to support musical understanding
- Plan inclusively: Explore how diversity can guide music planning, including strategies for supporting non‑verbal pupils in music sessions
What resources are included?
Alongside access to the training, you will be provided with a resource pack of ideas from the session.
