Silent Singing Projects
An exciting alternative to singing using Makaton signs, supporting schools to experience the benefits of singing whilst extra control measures are in place
With extra control measures in place at the moment, Silent Singing using Makaton signing is an exciting alternative for KS2 classes to continue music-making for those schools that would prefer not to sing with their pupils right now.
What is Makaton? Why are we using it?
Makaton is a unique language programme that uses signs, symbols and speech to enable people to communicate. It is accessible to everyone, and a very powerful experience that:
- supports the development of essential communication skills, such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation
- builds confidence, social skills, aids emotional development, well-being and self-esteem
- provides a way for shy pupils to find their confidence with performing
- encourages the expression of songs through signing and facial expressions
- benefits vocalisation upon the return to singing
What’s in the project?
Schools will receive 5 x 45-minute lessons per class bubble, taught by a qualified member of the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership Singing Support Team. Projects are designed for one KS2 class bubble, supported by their teacher or TA (if appropriate).
A project would include:
- Engaging musical activities
Warm-up activities, rhythm notation reading games and developing the art of expression and performance through signing
- Makaton songs
Makaton greetings and basic classroom vocabulary will be taught and used. Songs will be signed to performance tracks and we provide you with signed videos of each song, plus song lyrics and tracks to support you in between lessons.
The final lesson could be a performance, which schools may choose to video, in order to share with other pupils and parents to celebrate what has been achieved
Singing in the classroom
The good news is that with the right control measures in place, singing is an activity that can happen safely.
Our Silent Singing projects are flexible to include or exclude an element of singing depending on your assessment of the risks involved – Please do let us know when booking, what your preference would be.
