Peak District Strings Development Opportunity
An opportunity for an upper strings/cello specialist to grow school teaching and ensembles for young musicians in Buxton and Bakewell.
Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership and the Peak District Music Centres are seeking a talented, enthusiastic and reliable Upper Strings and/or Cello Specialist to join our team of accredited instrumental teachers and ensemble directors.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with young people at every stage of their musical journey, from beginners discovering an instrument for the first time to developing ensemble players performing as part of our Music Centres programme.
This role is self-employed and requires accreditation with Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership. Successful applicants will also be committed to working collaboratively as part of the Peak District Music Centres strings team.
What would be involved?
Initially working up to one day per week including early evening ensembles (Friday), plus additional ensemble work if desired. There will be a strong potential to build additional teaching and ensemble work whilst playing an active role in expanding string provision in the area and the Peak District Music Centres activity.
- Instrumental teaching: Delivering one-to-one and small-group string lessons in schools in the Peak District, particularly within the Buxton and Bakewell areas.
- Ensemble leading: Directing and supporting string ensembles with Peak District Music Centres (Buxton & Bakewell), helping young musicians develop confidence, skills and a lifelong love of music.
- Classroom Instrumental Learning (CIL): Work as a Music Support Practitioner within our Classroom Instrument Learning (CIL) programme, working alongside expert strings tutors in local schools and developing your own practice in whole-class teaching.
- Enhanced DBS checks: All successful applicants will be subject to Enhanced DBS checks. A DBS check is a record of a person’s criminal convictions and cautions, carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service. An Enhanced DBS check covers spent and unspent convictions, reprimands, cautions, and final warnings and any other relevant information held by police, plus a check of DBS barred lists. Any information shown will be used to ascertain a candidate’s suitability for role.

Rates of pay
- Recommended self-employed instrumental teaching rate: £36 per hour
- Music Support Practitioner (Classroom Instrument Learning): £19 per session
- Competitive rates for Ensemble Directing set by Peak District Music Centres
