1. Adventures in Music: Mini Beasts

Watch the video and join in with the song and movement activities. Look out for the slowly moving snail and the fast-moving buzzy bee.

2. The Flight of the Bumble Bee

This famous piece of music, all about a bumble bee, is composed by Rimsky-Korsakov.

What to do

  • Listen | Listen to the track above
  • Move to the music | The bumble bee is obviously flying very fast! Point your finger in the air and move in time to the music.
  • Draw | Can you draw a picture of the bee flying around? Where is he – in the garden? On the beach? At the play park?

Teaching notes

  • Tempo | When you talk about the speed of a piece of music you use the word ‘tempo’. This piece is at a fast tempo.
  • Violins | It is played on a violin – you could show a picture of the violin which is a member of the string family of instruments. There are lots of violins in an orchestra.
  • Expand | Look back at Issue 10 for the story ‘ Zin, zin, A violin’

3. Barbecue Blues

  • By Helen Wright with permission of Glenfall Music | A SingUp! song

We bet you can't wait for the warm summer weather to arrive, so you can enjoy a tasty barbecue in your garden with your family... but look out for the rain clouds!

What to do

  • Tell the story | Having the 'blues' means you're feeling a bit fed-up or miserable. Decide on three ways to show that you are fed-up or disappointed that the rain may spoil your barbecue.
  • Sing along | Watch and listen to Rachel as she goes through the days of the week, telling you what's cooking on the barbecue - watch out for the surprise on Friday!

Teaching notes

  • Facial expressions and body language | Explore different moods and emotions, but using body language as well as facial expressions. Can the children show happy, grumpy, confused, excited?
  • Days of the week | Once your pupils are familiar with the song - test their memories: What did you eat on Wednesday? / What happened to the shish kebab? / Where did you go on Monday? / What did you sit on, and on what day? / Which day did the weather change? Challenge your pupils to come with different questions.
